Governor trouble?

I just bought a '49 8n off ebay that was advertised as using oil, smoking, not presently running. The owner couldnt get it cranked and it had been sitting for months. It is still on the 6v system. Got it home and charged the battery overnight. The next morning, just for kicks, I gave it about half throttle and pulled out the choke and magically, it turned over very slowly (Im used to the 12V) and fired up with absolutey no smoke and purrs like a kitten. The oil guage is busted so I cant tell what the pressure is yet but I have one ordered. Runs perfect, lift works almost perfect (held a 5ft bushog up for about 45 min before settling). The lift goes up and down great though with no erratic movement. The only thing Ive noticed is when you put the throttle all the way back to idle it doesnt idle down all the way. You can take your finger and push it in at the carb and it drops instantly to a low idle. Where the throttle rod hooks to the governor, there is a little slack before it starts pulling the rod that is going to the carb. Also there is some play there where the levers attach to the gov. Maybe the bushing worn out?? The owner said the carb had been rebuilt and the steering box also. Looks to have new plugs and wires and he said new coil. Also I do have the shop manual and the master parts cat. Thanks for your input.

Brad

i agree with Dell and Bruce.

There should be no slack or tension on the gov rods.. check the linkage for free movement and no binding.. then check that slack.

Congrats on the good deal. You didn"t mention whether you checked if there was any oil in the pan. He said it smoked but it doesn"t. I would check for oil in the pan and oil pressure before running the engine again. Just a precaution you know. Good luck and enjoy it.

I don't think you have a governor problem; sounds like the linkage is binding. But, there are three ways to check the governor easily. Get the throttle lever at it's lowest point (engine idleing) Then, start tapping the throttle lever slowly open. How far does the throttle move before the engine speeds up? Lack of low speed throttle response (like about 1/3 of the throttle) is the classic symptom of a bad or out of adjustment governor. Next test, put it in gear at about 1/4 throttle, put your foot on both brakes & let the clutch out. The engine should speed up. Next test, w/ the tractor running, pull on the rod going to the carb; does the governor pull back? If that does not work, get out the I&T FO4 manual & check out the 'adjusting governor' paragraph. Finally, before I paid $200 or more for a governor, I'd pull it off & open it up. It could just need new balls & races.

I'm betting something is twisted or bent in the carb linkage.

Brad..... congrats on what sounds like a good buy.

You write..... .."when you put the throttle all the way back to idle it doesnt idle down all the way. You can take your finger and push it in at the carb and it drops instantly to a low idle. Where the throttle rod hooks to the governor, there is a little slack before it starts pulling the rod that is going to the carb. Also there is some play there where the levers attach to the gov"..... ..sounds like you've answered yer own question. NO SLACK on throttle rods..... ..Dell
