What you did is 'choking' the carb.

I'll bet you could do this with the choke knob and have it work.

Choke provides increased manifold vacume to the fuel system... this can help pull fuel thru a partially obstructed fuel system.. or.. i fthere is a large vacume leak, this helps get SOME fuel going.

In general, choke enriches the mix..

weak sparks will fire an enriched mix.

if you have a vacume leak, the mix will be lean.. enriching it with the choke helps to ballance it out.

I think it may be time for a spark test,.. if that shows good, then check carb adjustment.. if that doesn't pan out, then a compression test.

( Also check the obvious.. like.. is your air cleaner stopped up? )

Sometimes the flapper door on the choke butterfly is missing. This can make the choke less effective and the tractor hard to start. This might explain why he can choke it with his hand but not start it otherwise.

maybee less effective ?..but looking at the spring loadedchoke flap in relation to the plate.. it's only a small loss.. and besides..the flap is meant to be open during choke anyway!

Yep, I've found that on a couple of 8Ns that were hard to start.
