47 8n 6 volt system cranks but won't start.
Tries to start every now and then but just will not. Has gas at the carb (floods). If I crank and choke long enough it tries to start.
Any ideas on what I can check?

Check your spark, is it a good white/blue spark when the engine is turning over?? IF not that could be your problem. You say it tries to start but doesn't if choked enough. How cold is it and what oil do you have in it?? You might tyr takeing the air tube off the carb and with it OUT OF GEAR hold your hand over the end of the carb and see if it tries to start better. If its cold out it may not be getting enough gas to start. You said floods but how do you know it is since you say it tries to start if choke a lot. The 2 things do not match so to speak

I live in west PA temp goes from 20 to 40 on any given day. Tought about getting a heated dip stick.

Heated dip stick isn't a real good idea because it can/will burn your oil and thats bad. You say gas drips down the side of the carb, thats not right either. If its flooded gas should drip from the bottom not the side. Sounds like you have bad gasket or shaft seals in the carb and that will make it start hard if at all, could also be the gasket between the manifold and carb also being bad

What's your tractor need to run?

Air
gas
spark
(correct timing)
compression/vacume

Pull the air cleaner tube off.. check the bottom o fthe carb for gas flow thru the float needle.

try a thumb test over the spark hole for compression.. and the palm of hand over mouth of carb for vacume.. pull a plug wire and use a plug to look at spark.

Report back.

"....gas drip down side of carb,".

Yep, it will do that if you crank it long enough w/ the choke out. You flooded it & the plugs are gassed. Replace them & only use the choke after it has been cranking 4 -5 seconds, and then only lightly. If you have to keep holding the choke out for any length of time to get it to start, you have other problems. When is the last time you replaced the points/plugs/condenser & rotor?

A few years on a set of points is fine.. but they need to be cleaned probably 1-2x per year usually... won't hurt them to be cleaned and re-gapped.

I know you said good spark.. but if you have good spark and all that fuel. then it should have started unless your compression is inthe dumps. maybee if your lucky the rings are stuck.. or a valve stuck open.. but i wouldn't count on either of those if it has run recently..

Well, being a frontmount, you won"t have to install the points on the tractor in the cold! That"s the good thing about a frontmount.
