i had that problem this summer i cleaned the pump the best i could then cleaned the piston in the lift cover and it was full of gasket material all chewed up. put it back together and had to tear it up again. there are two small holes in the exhaust control valve that have to be clean so the oil will escape when pressure is released i beat it out with a drift punch cleaned it and it worked great. hope you dont have this much trouble

I have run into that plugged up exhaust valve ports in the control valve several times over the year.

When they are completely plugged with foriegn material the only fix is to press or drive the exhaust valve bushing out of the housing and clean out the ports.

Most folks I have to wait till i can git a clean shot,,, knowing you have a bad back you are a EZ kill,,, I take this as a spray wipe and go is not the answer to all ones hydraulic problems that is preached by folks that only know to preach what they have heard as the Gospel. folks seam to for git we are not work'n on a 2000 model that has been used by a little old lady to drive to church on Sunday,,, Not every repair has been done in a sterile environment with a blank singed check in hand.

Will admit that I did the best cleaning/rebuild job one could do to a N's belly,,, drove the tractor across town to clean a lot and the bush hog got stuck up would not come down,,, took the inspection cover off pry'ed the control leave back,,, hog hit the ground and its been good to go sense,,, Nature of the beast i figgered. One thang i do know is a N's hydraulics will werk in a rite nasty environment wearers other hydraulic systems will not,,, Demons are unforgiving even with a blank check.

Experience and opinions stated here are my own and may not be based on valid memory or sound judgment,,, personal responsibility on your part is required

It's probably a sticky exhaust valve. Remove the inspection plate w/ the dipstick, reach in & push the control rod to the rear. If the lift drops, you found the problem.

This is a classic symptom of a dirty pump.

Have you ever cleaned out the pump sump & changed the fluid? Check out tips 3 & 4 below.

After you get the old fluid drained out (overnight is best) remove both inspection plates & start pulling the sludge in the pump base out by hand. Then, get a couple of gallons of kerosene or diesel fuel & pour it into the pump base. Catch it in a bucket & reuse it. (Some folks use a hand garden sprayer.) Flush the pump base out 5 or 6 times. Do not start the engine to run the kerosene through the pump; kerosene and diesel fuel do not have any lubrication properties & you will damage your pump.

Some folks will tell you that this 'quick-clean' is not as effective as dropping the pump & doing a full job. I do not dispute that, but it worked for me (so far) for the past 3 years on my 1951 N. If you have the time, drop the pump; if not, you are at least getting some of the crud out of it.
