I have an old AMT snowblower with a Techumsah motor.
I can't seem to keep the muffler in place.
The bolts have backed out twice in the last two days and I'm bored looking for the muffler under the snow.
First question is, how do I keep the bolts in place?
Lock washers don't seem to work.
The second question is, would there be any harm to the engine to run it without a muffler installed?
As for the noise, I hear no major difference with it on or off.

Some small engine mufflers are set up wuth a metal "locking strap between the bolts... you bend over a tab at each end, over the bolt head, to lock them in place.

Is your's missing one of those?

If you don't have the tabs, drill a small hole in the bolt head and wire them together after tightening them down using a lock washer.

It has worked for me on similar applications.

Check the hole in the block - some of those were threaded for a standard small engine muffler. Don't run it without a muffler or short pipe - the exhaust valve can cool too quickly when you turn the engine off, warping the valve. Also, the aluminun block can cool too quickly, letting the steel valve seat get loose, as it cools at a different rate than the block.

I thought there was a reason not to run without a muffler.
thanks

I had a similar problem with a different engine and application. My problem turned out to be damaged threads in the bolt holes, so I installed helicoils and never had the problem again.

Locktite on the threads well work if your holes are not loose from wear. You could also JB weld studs in holes and use nuts with locktite on the threads. Brazing studs is a possible option too.

I didn't think locktite would work because of the heat. I put the muffler back on and loactited the threads.
Used the snowblower for about an hour, so far it is holding fine.
thanks
