I just thought I would post the final results of a hard start issue I posted a few weeeks ago. Yesterday morning I needed to move some snow, and thought this would be the test since it was in the teens yesterday morning. No heat, no jump, and no battery charger, and with 6 guage automotive cables. I pushed the clutch in and hit the starter and it spun over easily and started after a couple revolutions. Problem was a combination of old (likely original) bad bendix (spinning free after every release of compression or so it seemed) and cleaning up the mating surfaces where both end plates mount to the starter body, as well as the mating surfaces where starter mounts to the tractor using emery cloth and wire brushes. Previuosly this tractor would not start below about 40 degrees and even then it was difficult. I bought new brushes, but frankly did not need them so they are still in the box. I will probably go ahead and put larger guage cables on next time I replace, but I honestly think those 00 cables are a bit overrated and current will only flow as good as the weakest link will allow. In my case the starter mounting surface caused a bad ground. Remember that those surfaces are part of the ground circuit, and if those have paint, or rust starting will be difficult at best.

Ron, tnx for the follow-up. It's always nice to hear success stories! By all means, do put the larger cables on. The smaller cables you have are now the "weak link" in the circuit. Your success here is a testimonial to how easy it is to get the "dreaded 6v" to start in the teens. For some folks with money as no object, the "fix" would have been a $200+ 12v conversion. That is like the mindset of my family doctor; no matter my reason for seeing him, he always asked me if I was a smoker, and I told him I was. He told me I had to quit. Quitting smoking was the sure cure to every aliment I ever had..... just as a 12v conversion will cure every hard starting problem on an N. I suppose now that I've quit smoking, I'll live forever, just like a 12v conversion will never have another starting problem!

The best way to get a tractor started is a good clean carberator. Take the carb apart and soke in carb cleaner and make sure all the tiny tubes are open by blowing out. After I did this to mine it starts like a champ in all temps. If it will turn over, it will start. BTW, I didn't put a overhaul kit in, just a good cleaning. If you plan ahead, it would make sense to put a overhaul kit in as they aren't that expensive

My problem was that the tractor flat would not turn over enough to get it fired.

You are right Bruce in that many 12 volt conversions are done due to weak spots in the electrical system. The problems are still there, but the 12 volt battery will help overcome the weaknesses. In my instance I had replaced the cables, replaced the battery, rewired the entire tractor, and even taken off the starter and seen nothing wrong. What a difference simply cleaning up the mounting surfaces on the starter did. To make matters worse I had painted the tractor with the starter off and had some paint on those surfaces. I wonder how many starters are painted and no thought taken to basically insulating the circuit from ground? Sunday morning it was around 15 above and it cranked better than it did last summer even with the small cables. I am fully convinced now that it will start to zero or below now. I did get a magnetic engine heater, but now I will likely only use it if snow is predicted and temps are going to be very low.
