How do you tell when the spindle bushing need to be replaced? My spindles probably have 1/8" side to side play in them when in the axle extensions. Is it time to replace?

Thanks

Jake, replace them. New ones come in two sizes, one size must be reamed out to fit the spindles, the other comes ready to install and fit. Used them both and they are still in the tractors. I prefer to take the old bushings completely out, but it's your call. It's a very easy and quick job. Ron

Jake:

1/8" is quite indicates quite a bit of wear.

I would replace them to avoid wear through, which will wear into your spindle castings.

It's not a bad job. Simply drive the new bushings in on top of the old ones forcing the old ones further into the spindle casting.

Jake:

You will not need to ream the new spindle bushings. Indeed, it is quite likely that you will still have noticeable play after replacement due to spindle wear.

Put the bottom bushing in first and ream to fit. Then put the top bushing next and ream to fit.If you put both in at the same time you will have trouble.Leaving the old bushing in is not a good idea.

What trouble will I have leaving the old bushings in place?

They may get sideways and keep the spindle from going back in.The bushings are 2 different diameters. That why I fit the bottom bushing first.

May be a matter of opinion, but I would replace them. Worn spindles/bushings, along with a worn steering box, can cause high speed wobble. Don't be suprised to find the spindles/thrust bearings are in need of replacement as well.
