The original owners manual for the 8N side mount distriutor specifies .024 -.026" air gap between the point contacts. I have read some of the archives which quoted .015" for the 8N front mount distributor.

What should the airgap be for the front mount and if different from the side mount, why?

The side mount is .025" and the front-mount is .015" The distributors and coils are designed differently. Since I'm not an electrical engineer, I can't tell you exactly what the difference is, but the gap probably reflects coil design more than distributor design. The coil was designed to take the 6 volt and transform it to 15-20000 volts needed to arc the spark plug. When the points are closed the magnetic field in the coil builds up. When the points open, the field collapses and the spark is created at the plug electrode. The larger the air gap, the more time between cycles.(I guess we're talking milliseconds here) Since the front mount uses a strange coil and the side mount uses a more conventional automotive-type coil, the gap would have to do with the capacitance of the coil. The front mount also uses an external resistor so the coil doesn't get full battery voltage all the time. The side mount uses an internal resistor-design coil.

The gap for the points on a front mount dist. is indeed .015". I have no experience with the later model 8Ns with the side dist., so I'm not able to give techie info on their differences. Hopefully one of the more knowledgable posters on here will expand for you.
