Do the lamps dime /go out when you try to start it?

Check starter and starter switch connections.

It might help to check your starter brushes. You may also file down on the distributers.

It doesn't take much in a battery to light up the lights. Jump it (tip # 43 at the link below will tell you how to do it safely) and see if it is the starter. It's probably not; if it turns over w/ a jump, charge the battery & clean all the cables & grounds. Post back if you need more help.

You didn"t mention if it"s 6 volt or 12, but you could try taking a jumper cable from the battery side that is not grounded right to the starter lug where the big wire is attached. If the starter spins then the problem is in your starter switch or wiring, if it doesn"t spin you might have a bad starter, or low battery. Since you said the battery is good and the lights work I"d suspect the starter. You could also try pulling the tractor to start it. You could also get a voltmeter and test, you can see all of the wiring exposed from the battery down to the starter switch assembly, and out to the starter.

Good Luck!

Jerry.
