Howdy, ok i have cleaned the terminals and cables and no luck
Now i wont to try to jump start(6v from 12v) I have read how to do this but want to make sure. i put a jumper cable from the starter lug to where? the pos or neg side of the bat.? and then where does the other cable go from. on a 6v system is the pos and neg backwards?

If you are just jumping the 6v starter from a 12v battery, then get your 12v battery near the starter, put tractor in neutral and block the clutch down for safety.

hook one jumper cable to the starter lug.

leave the other jumper cable clamp hanging for a moment.

hookup both jumper cables to the battery..

Now hook one jumper cable clamp to the radius rod near the starter... the starter will immediatly spin over.

Don't worry about polarity.. starter won't care.

if you are actually trying to start the tractor, then make sure the 6v tractor battery is charged, and turn the key on... when the starter spins.. she should kick.

Tip # 43 at the link below will tell you how to do it. It does not matter which battery cable (positive or negative) goes to the stud on the starter. Just make 100% sure the tractor is in neutral.

Not the battery.

connect one cable to the starter, and another to a ground on the tractor. A rear wheel lug is suggested for safety reasons.

ALWAYS make sure you are out of gear if you do this.

Following your posts, I'd still be awfully suspicious of your battery.

Post back.

Hey Colin, I use to work at a major manufacturing company as a machine repairman. The welding crew would come to the job site and just throw thier ground cable on the steel decking and go to it on the machine. Didn't take but one job to find out that the tapered bearings in the machine would arc between the rollers and cups. Oh well, it did make more work for me.

Ouch!

That makes sense ... but I would have never thought 6 volts could present the same perils. Learn something new everyday :-)

I wouldn't use a rear wheel lug... you want starter current to go thru a bearing maybee? not me... just like with welding.. keep the ground clamp as close as is safe.. and try not to make current go thru bushings and bearings..

There are plenty of ok thinks to clamp to.. The closer the better.. foot board, radius rod.. etc.

I tend to shy away from any moving parts for arcing reasons.. etc.
