Plowing snow today noticed oil coming out of breather cap. Never done this before does anyone have idea why it would do this? Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

#1: Are you running a thermostat?

#2: Are you running a thermostat?

#3: How long since the last rebuild?

#4: What are your compression specs?

I am assuming that we are talking about an "N" tractor.

Robert:

You do not say what model tractor you refer to but since this is the N forum and 8Ns are the most common N, I will assume you refer to an 8N.

Flathead Ford tractor engines have no crankcase breather aside from the oil filler tube.

Generally, oil bowing out the filler tube when the engine is working hard is a sign of badly worn rings/sleeves.

It's probably time for a compression test.

How does it start hot/cold?

Sorry about not giving year or model Iwas a little freaked out about the oil coming out. Its a 48 8n. Yes to thermostat. No to overhaul. When 60 degrees or higher starts fairly good but cold have to pull start it.
