I recently bought a 9N and the seller said that he had to replace the camshaft gear. When I looked at the gear, I was surprised to see that it is an aluminum gear with no key to fit into the slot on the camshaft. I am wondering if this sounds normal or what is the wisdom of the readers on this subject?

Dell, Thanks for the response. My main issue is how to properly align the camshaft gear to the camshaft to ensure proper timing. The aluminum gear does not have an indexing tab that I can see that should mate up with the slot in the camshaft. I am going to bring #1 piston to TDC, set the camshaft with both valves closed and attach the camshaft gear ensuring that when I rotate the crank a couple of times, that the timing mark on the crank and camshaft gear align per the book.

DJ, I R N White Hall just north of Pine Bluff. R U close by.

Bill - the four bolt holes on the camshaft that hold this gear on are offset and you can only get all four bolts in one way. This ensures you can make no mistakes aligning the camshaft gear (as long as you do not grind the holes or just use three bolts).

Dan

A Bill..... ..yep, 4-bolts hold the BETTER aluminum camshaft indexed to the camshaft. Original camshaft gear was "bakelite", for a quieter running engine. Earliest N-Engine camshaft drive was "pressed-on" bakelite gear. How would you "index" that cam??? Many modern engines use rubber toothed camshaft drive for still quieter engine running. Why? 'cuz many perceive quieter engine to be higher quality ...ie... RollsRoyce Cadillac etc..... ..Dell
