Working on an old crawler. Not a Ford but folks here seems to know a lot so I thought I’d ask.

U-Joint between aux transmission and main transmission needs help. No parts available so it’s time to do some machining. The original design was just the universal joint riding in the cast yokes.

My proposal is to:

Turn the universal joint to clean up the 4 shafts (they are in reasonable shape)
Mill out the Yokes to restore a clean circular hole (these are a mess)
Machine a plain bearing with an ID to match shafts and OD to match yoke holes.

Now my question is: Bronze bushings or steel bushings?

Max RPM would be about 1700. Tractor had 23 HP when new 50 yrs ago.

Special tough U joints for extreme 'wheeling use bronze bushings, so I think that may be the way to go.

See link.

Bronze bushings will last along time if you machine the OD press fitted in the yokes after milling the yokes out.ID .002-.004 on your joints and you keep them greased.

What brand of crawler is it???? If its what I am guessing it is the u-joints can be found for it. So tell us/me what it is and I may know where you can buy them.

OC-46.

I did find some but a price that knocked me flat.

I have a large lathe and mill at work so this seemed far more attractive (and fun?)

Thanks
Phil

Yep

I've bought stuff from them before and they were great. The U joint was probably a fair price but way more than I wanted to spend :-)

I'd recommend bronze.

Bronze bushings should outlast you in this application.
