I need to top off the 8Ns hydraulic fluid. I've got 90W oil in it now but, because it takes a long time to get things moving in the cold weather, I thought I'd add 80/90W. Anyway, I've got Valvoline 80/90W that conforms to API GL-5, MT-1. Any reason why I shouldn't be using this?

If your not close to a New Holland dealer for 134D,contact your John Deere dealer, their Hygard Trans oil is very good.

You might want to go into the archives here, quite extensive far as talk on trans oil for "N"s

Me? I'd probably top off with thinner fluid.. or you can take a page out of a vintage JD manual and dump a cup of kerosene in there during the winter...

8N in VT,
Had 80W90 in my 2N and didn't like the slow response in MN cold weather. Put Ford Spec 134D in it. Much better. Come summer though it leaked all over and the lift wasn't as strong.
Finally got around to fixing the lift cylinder and the leaks and figured I had the best of both worlds with the 134D.

I have about half and half in mine right now of probably the same stuff.

I will let the others get into the brass eating potential of some fluids.

I'm not totally convinced, but don't let my decision influence yours.
