This is a follow-up to my post a couple days ago with this title. The rocking that worked to free an apparently stuck starter/ring gear worked once - accompanied by what I"m guessing was some bouncing around gear pieces sound. Today hitting the starter makes a sound like somethings spinning but not engaging with anything - kind of a fluttering sound. Can someone suggest a first step in figuring out what"s the deal? If it involves pulling the starter how tough is that? Will I be able to see if there is damage to the ring gear by just pulling the starter? If there are gear pieces kicking around inside would they be in the pan? I"m not ready to take on ring gear replacement level mechanics assuming that"d take more tools, time and skill than I"ve got. Given that, might I be better off just getting someone that knows what they"re doing right from the git go?

Not real hard to pull a starter but you do need to watch out when you do or it will come all apart in your hands. The bolts that hold the starter to the bell houseing also hold the starter together. Common for the starter drive to come apart and drop into the bell housing.

Scroll down to the bottom of this page and read all about removing the starter-titled 8N starter. Yes I would remove the starter and you will see ring gear damage if that is the problem. Not a big deal to split the tractor and replace the ring gear but not a job for someone who has only done things like replacing a bicycle chain.

You have to take the starter off and have a look at the starter drive and ring gear.

A quick search of the archives here will turn up HUNDREDS of threads on how to remove the starter.

If the drive has fallen apart, it falls into the CLUCH HOUSING, not the "pan" (oil pan). Some say it's perfectly fine to leave the old parts down there. I WOULD use a magnetic pickup tool, and try to "fish" them out, if at all possible.
