1952 8N runs 3 minutes then dies

Ford 8N newbie and not a very good mechanic so forgive my ignorance. Tractor starts first crank and ran fine for six weeks. Then had a issue of tiny chunks of rust in the filter at carb connection, so cleaned out the filter at carb and corrected problem. My father purchased additional screens for sediment bowl and installed. Now tractor starts and runs fine for a few minutes then dies. Choking as tractor starts to die mitigates the problem, but still eventually dies. Gas is running fine out of fuel line, checked by opening valve on sediment bowl, but have not checked fuel flow at bottom of carb bowl or looked for water. Is this a suspected float or clogged jet problem, or should I be looking elsewhere? After tractor sits for a minute, it will start fine again and then only run for a few minute then die. Have already checked that fuel line not too close to engine, so I do not think it is vaporizing (plus too cold). Any advice or testing procedures, obvious or otherwise, would be appreciated.

" you might see what happen if you four filter on and see what happen first it might run a little longer " USE AS A RUST TRAP.

Three minutes is about how long an "N" will run on the gas in the carb. Sounds like you have a fuel flow problem. As others have suggested open the drain plug on the bottom of the carb and see if you have a good stream -- not just at first while it drains the carb bowl. Good stream for at least a minute. Catch the gas in a glass jar and see iffn it is clean -- no water. If clean dump back into the tank.

Pat, sounds like you need to pull the carb, if you've cleaned the screen in the carb and both screens on the sediment bowl. Drop the carb and pull the bowl off, and with a torch tip ceaner and a air hose clean out all the jets and little holes in the carb body. John

Could be a fuel flow problem or a spark problem. I would start by pulling the drain plug out of the bottom of the carb and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas for 5 minutes/ Catch the gas so you can look at it so you can see if you have dirt etc. in it. The flow of gas should be as good as or better then what you put out when you go to the bath room. Also as soon as it dies check for spark you could have a condenser or switch going bad

You may have to drain the tank & clean it out of all rust fragments or it'll just keep clogging the filters . Good luck & God bless, Ken

I'd say you have a fuel delivery problem, and it could easily be in the carb. But, before you pull the carb, remove the bolt in the bottom of it & turn the fuel on at the sediment bowl. You should get a good steady stream as long as the fuel is turned on. If not, the N has three fuel screens; one in the brass elbow, one in the top of the sediment bowl & one on the stem of the sediment bowl in the gas tank. All three probably need to be cleaned again. If you have the fuel knob turned on all the way, it may be trying to feed off of the reserve inlet which is probably clogged. Put at least 2 gallons in the tank.

After you get it running, I'll bet you have the problem again unless you repair/replace the fuel tank. The rust in it isn't going to just disappear.
