My starter motor quit turning the engine over. There was no click or anything on my 1947 2N.

I could hand crank the engine fine.

I got some new battery cables and cable to the starter which fixed it.

It really cranks up well now. I've got the original 6v system, and with the new cables it cranks up like it did when I had to jump it from a 12v back when I picked up the tractor from my grandfather earlier this summer.

It starts up immediately. Previously it had the original 1947 cables, which upon inspection had the inner strand wires corroded/severed.

Some of you guys thinking of doing a 12V conversion, if you don't need the 12V for some other electronics, might just need replacement battery cables.

I remember reading sometime back how important good cables are on a 6 volt but what guage cables are recommended? I had to replace one this week & bought a 2 guage. They had a 1 guage but it was too long so hopefully the 2 is sufficient?

Ltljon..... ...you ask what "gauge" for yer 6-volt battery cable. p/n 14300 cable, battery, 1/0 gauge (one-ought) is what is recommended for 6-volts. 2-gauge is too skinny and is fer belchfire-V8 12-volt heavy duty applications. Most wimpy rice-rockets use 4-gauge.

Of course Ford spec's for the 2N-10655C battery is "13-plate" domestic. Don't say 'nuttin' about being 6-volts.

Seriously, consider yer 2-gauge an EMERGENCY cable and gitt a real HEAVYDUTY 1/0 gauge (thick as yer thumb) battery cable of appropriate length. $10 (cheap leason)..... ..Dell

Thanks for the post; it should be archived under "Common sense & good judgment"!

A 12v conversion is money well spent if you need bright lights or need to operate 12v auxiliary equipment.....or, you have low compression & do not have the time/money for a rebuild. But, IMHO, spending as much as $200 for a 12v conversion because the tractor is hard to start doesn't make a lot of economic sense to me. I can spend $200 on stuff other than tractor parts I don't need and get the tractor to start on 6v for a lot less $$$. I'm surprised that more folks don't advocate converting the N to fuel injection.....makes as much sense in many cases as a 12v conversion.
