My nephew has a 49 8n that has blown 6 coils since last year. It has a 12 vlt battery and a resister between the key and starter. apparently the starter is 6 vlt hence the resister. He has tried both 6 and 12 vlt coils but they only last a week or so then poof there blown. He buys these at tsc.Has anyone out there got a answer for this problem?

My 6 volt positive ground, with the 6 volt positive ground Chevy one wire alternator, don't seem to have these problems.

The problem is inferior foreign made coils. I converted to electronic and got a made in usa coil....problem solved. And mine is a front mount too.

I agree with Old and Bruce.

On a front mount unit.. it needs BOTH the OEM ballast resistor on the back of the dash, AND an extra resistor inline to use a 6v coil. now.. if you get a 12v coil, the ohm values of the coils vary so much that you just have to install them and check them with the oem resistor and / or other resistor combo's.. up to 2.5 ohms or so.. and make sure you have 3-4a of primary current.. NO more.. no less for everything o be happy.

Chinese coils are all over the range.. so each is a 'new' scenerio.. what works perfect for one may be too little or too much for another...

Sounds like its either wired up wrong or the resister it has in it is not correct. The resister need to be some where in the wire going from the switch to the coil. If its any place other then that its wired wrong

The resistor is (or is supposed to be) in the ignition circuit, so the 6v starter has nothing to do w/ the fact that it is eating coils.

To get a rough idea as to what the problem is, scroll down on this page to the post '5 More Hours, No Resistor'.

Simply put, you must reduce the current going into the top of the coil to 4 amps or less & that is done by resistors. In order to determine what resistors you need, you must determine the resistance of the coil, and as has been stated time & again on this board, the resistance values of coils today, be they "6v" or "12v" varies considerably.

The long answer to your question is in the second article attached below.

My suggestion is that you get a "12v" coil & measure it, then add the correct resistors to lower the current to 4 amps or less.
