My old 8N (circa 1949) has the clutch stuck and cannot engage gears. Anyone got ideas on how to release it without dismantaling the tractor????

Mine used to stick when it would sit out in the weather but I started wedging a stick in between the clutch pedal & dash. Worked like a charm.

Hey, a poor man's got poor ways.third party image

Besides the oil soaked clutch disc causing the problem you describe, 2 other causes are -clutch disk freezing to flywheel - put the tractor in a warm shop, or aim a torpedo heater at bell housing area , -clutch disk rusting to flywheel- old gave you the solutions to that , I have got one going in gear , drove it with the clutch pushed down and hit the brakes and popped it free.Splitting the tractor would not be necessary for either of these problems. If you have this occur again, block the clutch down if the tractor is going to sit for awhile.

Local Ford dealer would never steam clean an N series tractor without putting a C clamp on the clutch pedal to hold it down as the clutch would stick almost every time. I've seen the plate stuck to the flywheel so tight that we had to destroy the disk getting it off. No fun at all.

I pop them loose all the time. Just fire it up in gear. Yes it can be done by shorting the switch out. Be sure you are where you can drive it around with out running over any thing. Hold the pedal down and be ready to drive it for 5 minute or and hour which ever it takes. The block the pedal down when ever you park it. I have 2 8Ns with cement blocks on the pedal and thats how I always park them. Another way is to pull the starter off and with the pedal blocked down spray the clutch with brake cleaner and turn the engine over as you spray it. BTDT and have yet to spit a tractor to brake one free.

Old I might be miss understanding Paul but he states that he can not engage it into gear so how does he start it in gear as far as my own tractor was concerned was that I couldnt get mine into gear running or not and after splitting I found that the disk was stuck so replaced it and bang it worked just fine and I did not find any thing that seemed like it was broken or needed to be replaced except the stuck clutch plate where or what did I miss thanks for any insight for the next time hopefully a few years down the road JohnNoregon

When the engine is not running you or any body else should be able to shift gears. So then what you do is put in in 2nd or 3rd if an 8N and start it in gear and just drive it around. Very common problem with old tractors and having the clutch stick. And on most if you drive it around in gear they will pop loose and be good to go till they get parked for a few months. Any tractor I own that has the clutch sticking problem I just park and tie or block the pedal down so it doesn't happen. Shoot on the Allis B and C they have a lever for doing just that because of the clutch stick problems

JohnNoregon, when the engine is not running, he can put it in any gear, just not when the engine is running.

The same as trying to put one in gear, with the engine running, and not pushing the clutch down.

When mine first started it, I could idle it down real low, and snatch it into first.

Paul as per your question no there is really no way other than splitting that will take care of your problem and from my own trials I think that Zane's description will save you alot of sweat and blood which I lost during my way but like they have all said and a little time spent in the archive's you can do it all by yourself in a day if you got all your parts just have at it and enjoy JohnNoregon

Mine was stuck!! Dangerous it was!! 'Ell of a lot more dangerous than not having an ORC!!

I love it since I followed my advice.

I did replace most of the stuff in there, while I was there.

I don't plan on living long enough to need to go back in there.

I would rather stick a torch, to my properly prepaired gas tank, any time, than to run an N tractor with a stuck clutch into a tree!!!

Dunk said: (quoted from post at 22:13:10 01/04/08) My experience with this has been that the front tranny seal is leaking rear end oil on the clutch plate.

My recommendation is to break it in half, clean everything really good, replace anything that is needed, and especially the cheap front tranny seal, and put it all back together, and not have to fight this problem, and it work great for another 20 to 60 years.

Sometimes you can get by with just soaking the clutch plate in gasoline, and washing it, but sometimes the oil from the tranny will swell it, and you really need to buy a new one.

Zane, what are you drinking tonight? (I need some of it)

I did enjoy the post, though.

No need to remove the front end at all.

Put something under the oil pan like a small bottle jack or small floor jack and then hook a chain hoist to the center of the steering wheel, Support the clutch housing with a floor jack that can be rolled back with the rear of the tractor. Remove the bolts from the steering box where it is bolted to the clutch housing. Remove the bolts from around the Engine to clutch housing. Take up on the chain hoist at the steering wheel to support the hood and steering column and if everything is loose roll the rear back till the pilot shaft is clear of the clutch disc and let the clutch housing down enough to get by the steering box and then roll it all the way back till you have room to remove the pressure plate.

I have many times been able to unstuck a clutch by tying the clutch pedal down and then getting it out on the road in fourth gear and jumping up and down on one or the other brake. You can start it in gear by shorting the starter solenoid small wire to ground while in the seat and ready to go in a direction that you will not be likely to run into something.
You will need to do some truck driver gear shifting to get it into high gear but it can be done by manipulating the throttle on a level road while shifting. Don’t force the shifter though. If you can’t get it back into high gear let it come to a halt and start again. You don’t’ want to add insult to injury by breaking something in the transmission.
