Starter Drive Problems

Just got back from the country where once again, I have had the opportunity to become more intimate with my 8n. Fortunately, I got all my mowing done before the starter quit doing its job.
The starter drive assembly came apart when item #21 in the I&T book, page 56, broke (spring anchor plate). Also, the pin that retains the drive, Item # 12 in the I&T book, same page, was conspicuous in its absence. I guess its down in the bottom somewhere, lost in space.
Questions for those in the know:
Do you think that lost pin will cause me problems in the future with it floating around down there somewhere or will gravity save me from opening it up?

Can I buy the replacement pin and spring anchor plate separately anywhere or should I just get the entire drive assembly?

Thanks in advance for any advice on this. Pretty soon, I'll have a new tractor with an old serial number!

Happy Memorial Day.

Mr. Houston, If your tractor has been converted to a 12V. system, it would be best to replace the drive with an after market postive drive bendix. Normally the spring drive works ok, but it's not designed for the extra torque the 12V. gives.
I would not reccomend trying to repair the old drive.
As for the pin thats lost it should not give any trouble, it should be in the bottom of the housing, out of the way.....Jay

If It was me.... I would not worry about the pin. I would buy the new rachet type drive. They work much better than the old style.
