I almost did the same thing. Advance & Auto Zone were both $59 but remembered Tractor Supply was $39. Had to drive a little further but picked up some other stuff there too.

You could add a 12 to 6V drop'n resistor on it,,, and a 12V battery,,, long as you did not run headlights you could run it for weeks on a charge. Guy i know does just that,,, has run it like that for years,,, he mite use a 12V front mount coil tho,,, it would B safe using just the OEM resistor.

That's how mine was when I got it..no generator, no OEM resistor, just the 12 to 6V dropping resistor..Had been that way for years, and of course had the orig. style 6V square coil... Shoulda just left it that way.

Kevin,

I have one I can give you that still has some life in it. I'll be going up to the farm next weekend, and I can bring it back with me then. I'm in Minneapolis.

My email is open - or vashtarbin at hotmail dot com

But I gotta question your rationale for your needed conversion. A replacement 6volt VR is $26 bucks, a genny brush set is $3.5, and a new 6volt bat is $35. Total is less than half what it'll cost you to buy the 12 volt conversion kit - and you still need a battery after you buy the kit.

Joe, You prompted me to double check my receipt. Yes, I paid $35 + tax at a local shop. It's a battery labeled by a local company out of St. Cloud, MN - I can't recall their name right now. I've now had it 2 years. It cranks fine at well below zero, and has survived overcharging due to a faulty VR when first installed.

Well... at the moment I have a bad regulator, a week generator and an old battery. So 12v now looks to be the way to go for continued reliability.
That path means I need to do something with the 6v coil set up. I large resistor on the aftermarket 6v coil I have just doesn't sound like a good idea, and from what I read about the reliability of the current oem style 12v coils that isn't much better. So gutting a coil to make an adapter to a "modern" coil is the next plan. And of course I'd prefer to do this with a junk coil while mine is still running.

Oh ya, then at last I can install the cool vintage 12v fender radio I picked up on eBay.

I've got an old one I took off years ago. Both of my tractors are 6 volt and never saw a need to go to 12 volt. Now, the Farmall M was another story. I can't understand why folks want to go 12 volt on so many old tractors like the Fords.
