I need to drive my 8n over 2.5 miles of pavement to reach the field i'm cutting with the bush hog. I was told not to shift the tranny on the 8N while driving.. in other words, if i need fast ground speed (as in driving 2.5 miles of pavement)that i should start off in high gear. Is this correct? or should i start at a lower gear then shift up like if i'm driving a car with a manual tranny? I took off using 4th gear, but the engine bogs down, is this normal?

It is possible to shift the gears but I quote from the Operator's Manual "The tractor should be started in the same gear in which it is to be operated.
NOTE: DO NOT SHIFT GEARS WHILE TRACTOR IS IN MOTION AS THE TRANSMISSION MAY BE DAMAGED."
Owner Operator manuals are available from
N-Newsletter, PO box 235 Chelsea, VT 05038-0235 for 8N's.

I haven't had a problem starting in third and shifting to fourth.

the common practice used with the N is to shift into the gear you'll be using while it is stopped..if you want to change gears you must stop and shift(as per manual)..it shouldnt bog down when you start in 4th gear..check your sparkplugs..

Just run the throttle up about halfway, then slip the clutch a little as you start off in whatever gear you need. No big deal.

I shift mine on the run by double clutching. Use to be common practice. Works fine on non-syncro(sp) transmissions.. Telling my age here...

Always wondered what double clutching was.
Is it push down once to get it out of gear let up in neutral then push down to go to next gear?

What you're doing there in neutral though is bringing the input shaft rpm up or down to match it's gear tooth speeds with the output shaft gear speeds. Works on both downshifting and upshifting. Some are better at it then others. I'm really lousy at it. If you're really good, you do it so smoothly that you don't even need the clutch.

What's a real killer to is spend all week driving a 10-speed RoadRanger, using the clutch only to start and stop and then getting in your little pick-em-up truck and forgetting that you're still not in the big rig.

Not exactly,
Double clutching is only required when down shifting. When driving in fourth and intending to shift to third while driving you depress the clutch and shift to neutral. Lift the clutch and speed up the engine, this brings the primary shaft in the transmition up to speed to mesh with the lower (third) gear. Then depress the clutch again and if you spun the gears at exactly the right speed you can simply slip into third without any nasty grinding. In fact once you have an intimate relationship with your transmition you can shift without using the clutch at all.
The key is controlling the engine speed which controls the input shaft on the tranny. Double de-clutching is much easier with a foot throttle but can be done with a hand throttle but you have to shift with your left hand, adjust the throttle with your right and steer with your knee!
Up dhifting uses the tame principle but you must slow the input shaft between the gears.

Sorry for the novel but one you can do it driving any old machine is a dream.

Peter

You want to have some real shifty fun try it with a John-Deere A. Hi-Lo range lever, gear shift lever, throttle lever, and hand clutch. Hint: use your foot to shift the Hi/Lo range lever, and your other three hands for the rest.
