For whatever reason, some previous owner shortened the lift arms on MY '46 2N. I have acquired a replacement set but I can't get the old ones off!! When I tried to take the castle nuts off, the whole thing turns and there is no way to hold the bolt to take the nut off. How are they taken off???

You can also try heating the nuts with an oxy/acteleyne torch to dull read and try to remove. I've pulled many and usually have to cut them off with the torch

If the pin only spun under extreme torque.. and is otherwise tight.. you may have dodged the bullet.

My advice is to split the nuts with a hacksaw blade then nut splitter or chissle.. get the arms offf.. cleant he threads up, slip the new arms on and add some neverseize and new nuts. I had to do that to my 8n.. one side came off with lotsa heat.. then other had to be split.

Richard..... ..both the tapered pin 8N and the straight shank 9N/2N's lower link pins are kept from spinning by cotter keyed castellated nuts INSIDE the axle trumpet. The inside lower link 5/8-NF NUT is torqued to 150ft/lbs. The ONLY WAY to access that NUT is by removing the rearaxle trumpet. (and ag-bar tires and brakedrum etc)

TIP: swipe yer NEW trumpet paper gasket with HOTWATER to relax it so it fits over the diffy studs. Torque 7/16-NF studnuts to 40ft/lbs..... ..Dell

As Sean says but you can try this and it may work and I have done it before. Buy a set of needle nose vise grips and some times you can hold them with them. BUT you will still have to address the fact the pins spin sooner or later because when they spin they leak and when they leak they then ware in the housing and that can cause other problems

You are going to have to pull the left axle and trumpet. They have a castle nut and cotter pin on the inside. You can see both of the if you pull the PTO shaft but I bet it would be hard to do that way..
