Charley..... ..too late? but the test for bad 8N rear axle hub is grab top of tire and try to rock-itt east'n'west while tractor is headed north'n'south. Watch the NUT washer fer movement too. You don't haffta tighten the BIG NUT to 450ft/lbs for this test but it hassta be tight. When you tighten yer BIG NUT to 450ft/lbs, yer tractor gotta be settin' on the ground, otherwize you'll pull yer tractor off'n jackstands..... ...Dell

Dell, I did try that before I took the wheels off and there was just slight movement side to side on the axle or ?, you could hear the movement, but I didn't watch the big nut so don't know. When I put the hub back on there isn't any front to back movement. the splines don't seem to be worn that way. thank you all for the replies.

Sounds like the hub, and probably the axle as well, needs to be replaced. The only way I know of to test is to crank the hub on with the big nut to 150 lbs. and if the hub is still proud of the axle spline ends then you are fine.

Not scientific - I know.

The big nut was torqued to about 10 pounds, about hand tight when I took it off. Will put it back on and try to tighten. thanks

Once you determine if it is worn, or get another one - make sure you tighten the big nut to an amazing 450 lbs. of torque when you put it all together for the final time. This is not a mistake - the final torque for these nuts is 450 lbs. I get my 2' long 2" combination wrench and tighten until I can dangle my 190 lb. body off the ground on the end of the wrench. I figure this is close enough. Make sure to tighten it over and over again after use until running it a bit doesn't let you tighten it anymore. A loose hub wears the exle splines down right fast.
