Hello, I need some experienced advice. I had recently purchased a 1948 Ford 8N. The engine was overhauled about six years ago and runs great, but I noticed that with the tractor running and not in gear AND clutch out, the is a "whirring" sound coming from somewhere. When I push in the clutch, the sound stops. When I let out the clutch (tractor running & not in gear), the "whirring" starts up again. Does anybody have any ideas what this could be? Is this fairly common in Ford 8N"s?
Any input is greatly appreciated!

Not real unusual and unless it gets to be a growl it's probably no big deal. I'll guess it's the tranny input shaft bearing like others mentioned. I've heard a few that do that with no problems.

Before you go and rip the tractor apart please check the pto bearing - I had a very worrying noise coming from some undefined area - turned out to be the pto bearing which was totally shot.
To me a whining noise is not as scary as a grinding or rumbling noise which implies something more drastic.....my kids whine all day but they still are fine@!

I think it could be your pilot bushing located in your flywheel. If yoy split your tractor replace it with an altinator bearing as they fit just right.

I recently looked at a 1950 8N to purchase and it had that same sound you heard, and decided not to buy it. I now own a 1951 8N and it has the same "whirring" noise with it not in gear and the clutch out. My 8N has always been maintained by the previous owner and kept in a shed after farming chores. It runs great without any problems and looks good too. Just thought you would like to hear from someone with the same noise.

Sounds like it is the input shaft bearing and maybe the input shaft gear.

Dis-engage the pto and hydraulic pump. Lever is by your left heal when seated on the tractor. Move the lever forward to dis-engage. Does the whirring stop?

Ken..... .throw-out bearing only works when yer steppin' on the clutch pedal. His noise goes away when he steps on the clutch pedal.

Roo..... .yer tranny noise is probably yer tranny input bearing. Very common and NOT a problem. Yer tranny input bearing is splash lubed by an oil-slinger. Don't OVERFILL yer hydro-tranny 'cuz that'll kill yer clutch disc and yer rearaxle brakes. I wouldn't worry about it..... .Dell
