My '48 8N seemed to have a lot of oil in the rad, so I redid the head gasket, and now its still showing some. I pulled the upper rad hose the other day and a bunch of gunky oil came out, but I dont' see any in the radiator. New thermo, pump working, so it appears to be quite normal. If you drain the rad, it's probably got a thin LAYER of oil, and this is apptly normal...

and a true leak (such as a cracked head or block) WILL put water in the oil because as the engine is stopped the oil pressure will subside....but the water pressure (in a pressure system) will continue for many minues, forcing water thru the cracks into the oil. Result: milky oil.

What Dell said. A little bit of oilyness is OK. A true oil-leak which pumps oil into the coolant will make a real mess in a short time. Eventually will become extremely milky/gunky.

Arvin..... ..semi-normal. Did you know that anti-freeze actually has waterpump oil in it? And what you are seeing is semi-normal because of no hood over radiator neck to block daylite reflections like on yer belchfire-V8.

Howsomevers, floating oilsheen can also be a sign of leaking headgasket seal allowing combustion gasses to escape into radiator water. Radiator shops have a paper dip-strip that they use to test the floating sheen. Check.

It is NOT engine oil..... ...Dell
