Still no Start

I wrote a few days ago saying my 9n won't start. Did have it running for 5 minutes, ran good idle and top end. Shut if off tryed to start again and only spuddered. Could it be lack of vacumm through the carb

Well, I changed plugs & wires, cleaned points (only a few months old) cleaned carb and all filters, new fuel. Spark is bright blue (better than it's ever been) New key switch (a couple of months old) Checked firing order but knew that wasn't it because it hasn't changed.

I pulled the plug out of the manifold to check vacumm and it seems to be clogged with carbon? Could there be a problem with the manifold? Should I remove it? I started to loosen the bolts and all but one loosened easily. Don't want to break it and was losing daylight so I stopped there. Any other thoughts? You have been a great help so far!

This problem should be pretty easy to narrow down. My first thought is that your fuel system screens are clogged. See if it will hit on starting fluid when it won't start. There are 3 fuel screens. One in the tank on the top of the sediment bowl, one in the top of the sediment bowl, and one in the angle fitting at the carb.

Second, I have to ask if you have done a voltage conversion and eliminated the ballast resistor between the key switch and the ignition coil, which would make me wonder if you are overheating and breaking down the coil. See if your coil is hot to the touch. If it is, there is a problem there.

Third, I would suspect a carbon track in the distributor cap that conducts better to ground as it gets warmer.

You know, I'm not even a tractor guy. I'm just an electro-mechanical troubleshooter.

Good luck,

Ken

Have you checked if the exhaust pipe is restricted? I had field mice pack pecans into the tail pipe two separate times causing no start.

No expert here but on any IC engine I first verify fire and fuel. You got good fire. Was running when turned off. I try some starting fluid. If it fires. I guess you could suspect fuel or fuel delivery problems. Somehow I don't feel low vaccum to be the smoking gun.
