During a recent farm tractor show a guy with a 8n had a truck coil hooked up to the 8ns ford front mounted coil. He had drilled a hole in the 8n coil soldered a wire to the rotor contact then ran the wire to the truck coil. Has anyone ever heard of this and does anyone know what kind of truck coil to use and how to do it?

sorry guys to expand the reason was he had no luck with the tractor coils it seems they didnt last. The guy was retired and owned a large tractor dealership he loved old tractors but got tired of changing the off shore coils.

He probably changed coils alot because he did not run the correct resistance in series with them.

I find it strange why people will be willing to change a 26-50$ coil every few months.. but won't add a 50 cent to 12$ resistor 1 single time... go figure!

I'ts quite common to farmerize in a round can coil in place of the square coils. some people gut and old square coil for this.. others make blank plate.

there is a kit available to do this.

if the machine is still 6v.. use an 8n 6v round coil and no ballast resistor. if the machine is 12v, use a NAPA IC14SB 16$ coil.. and no ballast resistors.

I wonder why he would go to all that trouble. Why not just put in a new coil. Looks like he hasn't tried to find the original problem.

Probably had a truck coil in hand and no money for a new coil.

How do we KNOW it's a "truck" coil and not a "car" coil????
