Tractor ran fine yesterday til it ran outa gas from small temporary tank (hood is off). Filled it back up today, tried to start & it wouldn't. Was getting good gas, checked plugs, no fire, checked points, (side mount) some fire but then I noticed it sparking under the plate the points are on. Didn't see anything loose & even put new points in, no change. At the last the only spark was coming from underneath.

Before doing any of this I had been meaning to polarize the generator. I thought I was touching the correct wires on the voltage regulator but maybe I didn't. Got a spark like I'd read I should.

Reckon I blowed the condenser or something else?

Earlier on when I had fire on the points why wouldn't I have fire on the plugs?

Forgot to tell you all the other stuff (I forgot I had) beside the 437's I came up with while looking for the manual in the shed:

Craftsman 3 Channelock set, Craftsman combination wrench set, cheap trade-lot wrench set, small bottle of Wild Turkey, a box of tools I'd taken out of my old dumptruck 8 yrs ago & a can of sardines.

I think I see a system here. If I get all these tools & other items together the tractor should be fixed & I won't need no manual!

How would ya know if sardines go bad anyway....

I took the plate off the distriutor & cleaned out a lotta gunk & got it going again. It was just wierd how it went from running fine to not running,

sitting overnight. Go figure.

But back to polarizing, I was jumping the right ones. Just didn't trust my own judgement even after chasing the wires down. A picture is worth a lot (Thanks Gary)

Thanks to all ya'll, I'll have more soon!

Spark under the points mounting plate is simple. You need to clean it up its dirty under the points mount plate and the reason you have weak spark is the points mount is dirty. Sort of like having dirty points but in this case its the points mount plate. Probably has oil/grease under it. Or the screws are loose but if that where the case the point gap should be all over the place

The sparks you see underneath the plate may be from the weights hitting the screw.? Need a shorter screw. Copper strip may be cracked. Best take it apart to see. HTH

Yea, I got that but I wasn't sure I was jumping the right connections & being that was the last thing I did before attempting to start it I thought I might have zapped something else.. Ya'll say jump from "Batt to Arm" but if it's not labeled on the regulator some of us (meaning me) ain't 100% sure we're in the right place. Granted if I could "find" my freakin' manual it would probably help! :) My darlin' wife probably "put it up" for me.

It was getting too dark to do much a while ago but I'll take the breaker plate off tomorrow & see if I can figure out whats sparking down there.

The wire & insulator looked ok when I changed the points.

Thanks

Like I said.. quit worrying about the genny while you are fixing your points. i already told you that the 2 circuits are only common with the battery... there aren't any connections on the VR that you can momentarilly jumper that will smoke the points.

BAT to arm.

Can't find the connections?

Armature / gen connection is fairly obvious on the back of the genny.. it's the BIG wire.

battery? well.. it only has 2 connections.. and one of them goes to ground.. thus you know it has to be the other one. IE.. jumper battery hot ( negative if in a +grnd setup ).. to the armature connection.

easy as pie.. no fiddling under the dash where you can't see.. electrically produces the same result.

Wow.. this message is all over the place.

First.. rule out the genny.. for all intents and purposes.. the charge system has nothing to do with ignition except keeping the battery charged.

You could rip the genny off and toss it int he back yard and as long as the battery was up and the enfgine didn't overheat.. the points wouldn't care.

I wouldn't be as worried about the condensor as i would about the insulator in the side of the distrib, and the little copper feed over strip. Pull the breaker plate for a looksee so you won't have to keep guessing.
