I bought a plug/pigtail at NAPA for the 2 small wires on Delco alt. (#VRC148) and the wire for #1 connection is somewhat heavier than the wire for indicator lamp (#TGA10) for excite wire. Will this be a problem? How much current goes through this wire to excite the field? Thanks

I just keep finding more strange wiring on this $600.00 N. Why would there be a wire with a condenser on it going from the INPUT side of coil to a ground by the Alt. mount bracketry? The condenser rests on the cyl head, bare. Thanks guys.

If it REALLY is a condensor... in reply to Phippsburgh, 01-11-2008 09:39:15
If it REALLY is a condensor, someone may have put it there for radio noise suppression.

That was a common thing to see on vehicles from the breaker point era... a condensor from the ignition switch side of the coil to ground.

Connector with pigtails in reply to Phippsburgh, 01-11-2008 06:21:28
For some reason, those pre-made pigtails come with a HUGE 10 or 12 gauge pigtail for the #2 terminal.

The #2 terminal is for voltage sensing, and carries only a TINY fraction of an Amp.

As JMOR says, the #1 "excite" lead carries 3 Amps at the very max, with the diode setup, as shown below.

If you use a diode instead of 6 watt indicator lamp in parallel with 10 ohms (as in factory GM application), you may see 3 amps, whereas the factory set up is about 1 amp.
