Our 8n lives in an unheated garage in upstate NY too and in the summer I run the snot out of it bushhoggin' the farm! It's been about 30 years or more since the motor has been rebuilt, but still has good power and burns no oil!

15w-40 Rotella T

Starts in the winter on 6 volt(sometimes after sitting for a month or so), holds good oil pressure whilst working in the hot sun in July and August.

My 49 leaks & burns it so fast I've poured used Rotella from a Cat Diesel in it just to keep it going. When they get to this shape I figure any oil's better than none.

I did recently change it cause I found a case of 60wt I used to run in my motorcycle. Don't seem to push it out quite as fast as some of the lighter weights.

It amazes me how motor oil can start such disagreements and wide opinions... and how those who are absolutely adamant about how Henry wanted a certain weight and recipie gear oil and how, by God, what was good enough for Henry is the only thing that should be used, or else! .... And those same folks start swearin' by SuperDuper 10W30 or MOJO Full-Synthetic in everthang inkloodin' old Fords....
Use inexpensive SAE 30 wt. "detergent". Any brand. The cheaper the better as long as it has that little API "star" and rating on it, such as SL, SJ, etc.. They all come from the same world-wide oil wells, refined in the same refinerys, and put in whatever brand-name bottles the want to, and THEN decide how much to charge for it depending on whose name is on it.

It will be better than what Henry suggested and your tractor will do just fine with it for decades.

Pick the weight of the oil by the condition of the engine (oil pressure) & the outside temperature. Many folks use 30w detergent all year. A worn engine with multi-vis oil may lose it's oil pump prime if it sets a while. Many use 10w30 or 40. Some like the newer diesel rated oil because of the additives for the flat tappets. (I'm not convinced that my 2400 rpm N engine needs the same oil as my 65 Mustang did) Anyway, IMHO, use a detergent oil. Increase the weight if the engine has low oil pressure. If it gets infrequent use, stick w/ straight weight.

Osweld, Back when I was in the yard mowing business we had these zero turn mowers with hydraulic pumps for locomotion. Anyway, they would get so darn hot you couldn't touch them. Only one oil was recomended for this grueling torture and still maintain a year warranty. "Mobile One" motor oil straight thirty weight. On these old tractors I use noting else but as soundguy said let the old engine tell you what weight to use via compairing the oil pressures. Most race car guys preffer using 20w50. I tried this heavy oil in my 2000 caravan and made a hellofa lifter racket. So I changed the oil back to 10w30 and all is well again. Some little forign cars can't handle the thicker oils because they are built with real close tollerences. These old tractors on the other hand, not so close tollerences. Listen to your engine and watch the oil pressure for your own clues to what your engine needs. It's really the best way.

Mobil 1 doesn't make a straight 30 weight oil. All Mobil 1 products are fully synthetic. You must be talking about regular Mobil oil not Mobil 1.

1951 8N, Dog gonnit I got it half right anyways. It was 10w30 and was fully synthetic. I'm using it in everythin now days. Good stuff but costly. I used to use Rotella T and Delvac in my hunting trucks. Delvac is some good stuff too but hard to find at times. I occasionally add some Marvel Mystery oil to my engines and gas tanks.

BishopN, Yep in Lake Charles. I hear a fellow round your parts has a huge tractor junk yard. Somewhere around Jennings maybe. Do you know where this might be? My Dad said he used to go there but Dad passed away a bit over a year ago. I need a good rust free original N hood real bad for Dads ole tractor I'm restoring. I know it just might be a bit too much to ask to find this N hood in South Louisiana rust free but I must look anyway. Trying to keep it original as much as possible.

We are 10 minutes north of Lafayette, just about in the middle.
It's good to know i'm not alone down here.
Orginally from Tennessee, married a cajun 30 years ago and retired in Atlanta and moved here in 1999.
1952 8N that my wife's great uncle had for 27 years, I bought it in 1998, 10 years ago. Still 6V original, and runs great. I went to bushhog last month three acres 2 miles from home. Got almost there and the right rear started going flat. Turned around and made it home before losing the air.
After inspection it was just the valve in the stem. Replaced it, aired it up and went back and got the job done. All four tires are the same tire that were on the 8N when bought 37 years ago.

BishopNsunset,

I sent you an email so we could trade addresses. Just don"t know if you got it. Talking about old hand me down tractors. I have my Grandfathers old Earthmaster Model C that he got from his Great Uncle. My Dad had my Grandfathers tractor out at his place and he got NAPA to conpletly rebuild the engine when I was ten years old, I"m 43 now. The engine never got back into the tractor since rebuild. I"m going to have the frame sandblasted this summer and put that rebuilt engine back in. I used to ride on the hood of that old tractor and hunt rabbits with my 410. Those were sure good times back then.

30w if you have good oil pressue.. and if great oil pressure.. a 15w40 in areas that can get cold, yet be warm during the day.

for looser oil presure.. 20w50.. or even 40w.. heck.. some run 50w as a bandaid for a while.. etc.

let temps, oil pressure, and working conditions dictate oil weight to use.

I use 10-30 AMSOIL in my '49 8N with good performance. Use the 8N for hauling firewood, buzz-saw, and clearing trails for dog mushers. Great little tractor.

I use 30W in mine but I'm in Missouri where the weather changes all the time. Cold days its iffy at best but then wait a day or 2 and all is well again. Also makes a difference if yours is set up on 6 volts or 12 volts. If you up north a 10W-40 or 20W-50 will work ok but if it burns oil a muti grade can cause fouled plugs

I use 10w-30 all year . Have had no problems here & it gets cold & damp in the winter . Your location & climate has alot to do with the decision . Does it sit inside or out ? Everyone has their own preference tho . HTH !
