I am a novice at working on Ford 8N. Ours is stalling out unless choke is nearly all the way out and throttle on high. Possible problems/solutions?

Mine has been doing that, and now it isn't. I'll tell you what my cure was.

#1, tank was low on gas. It's amazing how poorly machinery works when it's running out of gas. :-)
Seriously, I'd say that with a rather big flat bottom tank there's very little pressure on the fuel to actually work it's way down to the carburetor with only an inch or two of fuel standing on the bottom of the tank. Made worse for me at least by hills and such that get the fuel away from the gas line. So my "cure" for the future? Keep the tank topped off.

#2, I've seen some griping messages about the points rubbing block wearing away rapidly with certain types of points. Pop my cap and sure enough, mine too has smeared itself onto the distributor shaft and the points are barely opening. Clean things up, relube, reset the points.

Between these two things my 8N has changed from a very balky, hard to start machine back to a quick starting and smooth running beastie.

Turn the fuel valve off. Take the fuel line loose at the carb inlet elbow. Turn the valve back on 2 turns and see if you have a copious fuel flow at that point. Then open the valve full open and evaluate. If you have a really good, gushing flow of fuel, then I'd go to the carb next. If not, clean or replace all the filters from the tank to the carb. There is a filter inside the tank, a barrel-shaped filter in the sediment bowl, a screen wire mesh filter across the top of the bowl, and a screenwire-filter inside the carb inlet elbow. Once you have full fuel flow, open the float chamber drain and see if fuel flows out. If it does then you have a good supply of fuel to the carb. The next thing to do is remove and totally disassemble the carb and thoroughly clean it by soaking it overnight in a NEW gallon can of carb & parts cleaner(Gunk brand at most auto parts, about $12.00). Blow out all jets and orifices with compressed air, followed by aerosol carb cleaner and more compressed air. Check for looseness and play in throttle and choke butterfly shafts. Inspect the main metering needle for scarring or pitting on the tapered tip. If it's messed up in any way, get a rebuild kit and replace all the parts. Reassemble and adjust idle screw and main jet screw 1 turn out each. Open fuel valve, crank the tractor and tweak the screws to obtain smooth idle and main mixture.

I had a similar problem that turned out to be a combination of two things. There was so much junk
in the tank, orfices in the carb became clogged and the fuel feed out of the tank was clogged.

First thing to do is a complete tune up, electrical and fuel. Chances are that will fix it and if it doesn't you have a better place to start trouble shooting.....
