with 12 v system on 8n can you use a voltage regulator between the ignition switch and coil instead of resistors?

My guess is a solid state vr would soon croak in an ignition circuit. If it is a frontmount get a 12v coil and a resistor combo to get you between 3a and 4a.

if it is a side mount. get a REAL 12v coil like a napa ic14sb and forget about the resistors.

Well yes maybe if its a solid state type VR. But if its the old relay type no because the way they regulate is by opening and closeing the relays and when the relay opened you would loose your voltage to the coil

Why switch to 12 v & have these concerns ? If you keep all connections clean & brite with a good 6v battery , it should start ok . I did switch my 2 old Fords to 8v years ago . The only change I had to make was the VR had to be tweaked to assure around 9.6v was being put back into the battery . In the 7 or 8 years I've only had 1 headlite burn out & replaced 1 battery after 5 yrs of use . Everything stays as 6v . Good luck & God bless, Ken

Well,..... ....I suppose, but since a 12v system typically runs at about 14.8 volts and a 6v coil at 2.45volts according to Ford spec sheet, that is a 12.35 volt drop across your regulator at about 3 to 4 amps or about 36 to 49 watts of heat for it to dissipate.

That will take a pretty hefty regulator. But possible.
