First...you do not have 'HI/LO'. You have 'REGULAR(standard)/LO'. That IS the shifter handle for the 'Howard' gear reduction made by Rotary Hoes of Essex, England in the right inspection cover.
As Dell said, it is NOT a pulling gear! It is a groundspeed reducer of 3.5 to 1 to enable the use of a 'roto-tiller'. Abuse it at your peril.

Steve..... ..you've described the shifter location in the 6"-round dipstick plate behind yer right heel for the rare and fragile "Howard" aux tranny. (its real name is NOT Howard, but everybody calls it that) Valuable low speed for rototilling operation. IT IS NOT A GRUNT GRANNY GEAR. It is about 2.75 times reduction for PTO operation of rototillers. Most N-Tractors are too HI-SPEED for rototilling operation, hence the need for slow-down tranny..... .....Dell

Go to John Smiths website . He has all the auxillary trans listed & described . The hi range you think you have could be one of two ways . Either its in the regular gear ratio which you think is low & then when you shift the lever it goes to high range . Or it could be that the high range is the standard gear ratio & when you shift to low range you do have the low range . Hupp made it both ways . Hupp has the handle on the right side when you sit on the seat . Sherman is on the left side & is a much better auxillary trans of the two mentioned . The low range Hupp is the besty of the two made by Hupp . With these little Fords you need power not speed ; unless for road traveling . HTH ! God bless, Ken
