Preparing to do brakes & replace axle shaft on '48 8N. Have FO-4 Manual, Parts Catalog, J. Smith's & other info. from this Board.(1) Good idea to put anti-seize lube on "drum-holding" screws & on axle shaft splines? (2a) Could not find in the Archives the Zane post re using silicon as added brakes anti-leak measure.(2b) Correct that on this model using wheel brg. grease on the axle bearing is unnecessary as bearings lubed by gear oil? Tks. in advance. Pls. stayed tuned. Angelo

"Splash" lube still happens whenever the tractor (or whatever other vehicle) makes a turn or runs on a hillside, etc etc. Oil spills out of the diffy and runs down the axle-trumpet to the wheel bearings. It only needs a drop or two every once-in-a-while in most vehicles. (But pre-lubing during assembly is always a good idea..... it might be awhile before any gets "spashed" back up there again.

Angelo:

I use anti-sieze on just about anything that I ever anticipate taking apart in the future, including the brake drum screws on my vintage fords.

Am-Seb..... ...don't even need them flatheaded drum holding screws, (theys used to keep the brakedrums on during the assembly line trip) but you can anti-seeze'em ennyways and use them.

Yeah, you can anti-seeze the tapered spline hub iff'n you want, won't hurt unless you've gott WORN tapered splines and then guess what??? Grinding compound. Remember to torque that BIG nut to a gutt-busttin' 450ft/lbs. Then re-torque it a couple of times.

ALWAYS greeze yer wheel bearings. The splash-lube scheme is marginal at best and needs to be overfilled to be effective. Wannna guess what OVERFILL does to yer brakes??? Hydro-tranny oil won't wash it out. And iff'n you do the "Zane" silicon seal trick, then guess what??? NO SPLASH LUBE ennyways..... ..Dell
