OK, I expect you guys will verify my suspicion that it can't be welded. I have a crack in my diff case just a couple inches long in front of and a little lower the axle. Not close to any edges. I suspect it is previous ice damage. I have been doing some serious snow plowing with a 7ft back blade and it hasn't grown at all. I have silicone over it for now. Am I gonna look foolish if I haul it to a shop to see if they'll try a weld or should I just braze it this summer? I'll probably drain it again this summer to overhaul the lift pump anyway if it can be welded.

Ok guys, I feel better now. I didn't know they were readily available. Good price from John Smith. Maybe I can talk him into dragging one to the Buckley Old Engine show if he goes to that one. Otherwise, if anybody knows of any parts tractors in michigan? I need other things sooner or later too.
Thanks again,

Don

I'd replace it.. or if in a tight spot.. braze it when clean and empty., after drilling the edges of the crack out.

The trans case was cracked at the drain hole on my 8n Funk conversion from water freezing inside . I was told it could be welded so I drained & cleaned it . Heated it good with my torch & tried welding it . Refilled it & it leaked . So I drained & cleaned it again & tried brazing . Still leaked but worse . So I just bought another case & switch the insides . So my advise is , exchange it & be happy you did . God bless, Ken

Cheap as a diff case is I would replace it,,, would B different it they were rare,,, should not B hard to find a good'n.

I would not attempt to weld it less it came apart and cleaned,,, then a wish,, bad odds,,, I play the odds,,, replace it or live with it.

I agree Hobo,
Rear housings don't sell generally. He should be able to find one pretty reasonable.

Before I got my 8N, it appears that someone let all of the oil pan, to bell housing, bolts fall out and it broke the whole back off the engine, and it was was re-welded. (I don't really know how it happened)

The welder was really GOOD.

Cast iron has to be heald at around 600° - 650° to electric weld it.

Brazing can be done without that.

Thats one of those it might be able to be welded. A lot depends on where it is, how bad it is and if you have a place that has the correct equipment to do it. Brazing will also not work well unless you again have the right equipment to do it. Something like that needs to be heated in an oven, welded and then heated again so it will cool real slow. If its heated up with out an oven it can/will get hair line crack in it and you will be worst off then when you are now
