Wrong generator pulley?

I cracked my old generator pulley and ordered a new one. The male part coming from the generator is threaded so I ordered a threaded pulley. When I got the pulley it was to small to fit on the generator. I noticed there was one (keyway) and one (threaded). Also, I cannot seem to get the old pulley off. Any tips on getting the pulley off and whether or not I have the right pulley. It is a 6 volt front mount distributor. I think 50 model but not sure, the guy I bought it from said 48 but the majority of the board here said it was a 50 or later. Thanks for any help.

Allisue...my '48 8N has the threaded pulley generator. Not sure when Ford switched over to the keyed-pulley genny, but yours could have been changed out anyway.

If you're having trouble getting the old threaded pulley off make sure the c-clip isn't still on the end of the shaft.

A WAG ... but you may not have a genny for an N. Could be a later style Ford generator, or maybe not even a Ford. Could you post a photo?

I should think you could take your genny in to a good parts place, implement dealer, ag hardware, or machine shop and they could find a pulley that would fit that generator.

I am not sure about yours.....the genny on my 9N is threaded. I think most later gennys had keyed shafts.

Anyhow, I recently put a new front bearing in my genny. Had to take the genny apart to hold the shaft while unscrewing the pulley. If'n you do that, you might consider putt'N a new front bearing in the genny. Grainger part number 6L025.

Thanks for the response. There are obviously threads on the generator shaft but I don"t understand why the pulley is too small. The only thing I can think of is that the keyed pulley also has some threads. I am just confused. From what I gather, there are only 2 pulley"s for these tractor"s (Threaded and Keyed).

Allisue..... .the 2N-Ford gennys were 1-terminal 3rd brush 11-amp gennys with THREADED 3.50" dia pulley.

The 8N-Ford gennys were 3-terminal 2-brush 20-amp gennys with sheetmetal KEYED 3.68" dia pulley. Pulley is cupped back OVER the genny..... ..Dell

The one you have pictured here looks just like the one I have bought. It measures about 3.68 in diameter but it is too small to thread on the generator. Is that the picture of the 8n genny? You can tell I a rookie at this but I"m determined to figure out all I can without taking it to someone to figure out for me. Thanks a lot. Allisue

Allisue..... ..there are 2-genny shaft diameters that the OEM pulleys fit. The 3.5"-dia threaded pulley has genny armature shaft dia = 0.59". (9/16")

The 3.68"-dia keyed pulley had genny armature shaft dia = 0.68". (5/8")

In otherwords, you can't force a 9/16 pulley on a 5/8 armature shaft..... .HTH, Dell

8N 3 wire and 3 brush genny??? in reply to Dell (WA), 01-15-2008 13:43:24
Dell, the genny on my 49 8N has 3 wire and a high/low adjustment screw on the back. I've never had it apart. Does the the adjustment screw mean it is a 3 brush genny?

Thanks, Harold

Harold..... ...yeah, yer genny is a "left-over" 3rd brush abomination with a squarecan voltage regulator under the oil pressure gauge. Adjust the 3rd brush for MAX CHARGE and let the squarecan voltage regulator regulate the battery charge..... ..Dell
