I emailed a place in San Antonio just see what the cost would be...I have a rebuild kit on hand...You know just in case...I read in the archieves you need a special welder to solder in 2 of the brushes...I could drop it off...Dont need shipping...

Here is the email I got from them...

Hello, the labor charge for rebuilding that size of starter is $80.00 plus any parts that don't come in the repair kit & shipping to your location.

In most cases a 1 week turn around time.

Thank You

Steve

$20, 40 years ago. Last one I had done. Not a real hard job or I would have kept on paying. Bought a couple new ones with lifetime warranties.

Sean, ... right up the road from you in Marble Falls is "Stanley Auto Electric" (just out on the north side of town on the west side of Hwy 281.)

He offered to do mine for $35 labor, when I already had the parts. He mentioned it took a pretty heavy-duty soldering iron to solder those brushes. (He has experience with them.)

two years ago I bought a brand new starter(without the drive) from a FNH dealer in upstate NY for $95 and kept the old unit. Works great.

Sean, Not sure if you remember me from San Antonio, actually a bit further South, Floresville. If you are coming all the way to S.A. I would suggest going a bit further and make the trip down to Poth. It is Ken's Tractor Repair. I, as well as a great deal of my friends take our tractor repair work to him and he does great work at a very reasonable price. I'm sure he will do you right. Just an idea.

Ron

Sean, I bought new brushes for my starter at ford. took the starter off and delivered it to to an automotive electric shop to be rebuilt. Went back 4 days later and picked it up and the new brushes, paid $27.50 to have the guy tell me it had a bad bushing in it that he replaced from his stock parts and there was nothing wrong with the brushes. How much is shipping?
Your shipping cost is determined at checkout. Most items ship for $8.00-$18.00 for regular ground shipping. We also offer Next Day Air and 2nd Day Air services for an additional cost. We combine shipping on multiple items to save you money.

I would feel real greedy if I charged half of that . Un less they are replacing the field coils too which won't come in the kit. All you need is a heavy soldering copper to replace the brushes. 10 minutes 5 to get the copper hot and 5 to solder. Change 2 bushings and the drive & it is ready to assemble. Total job with cleaning, about an hour.
