ok, on these old 8N"s do you take off in lower gear and upshift when moving or shouldn"t you upshift these tractors ? Someone told me no upshifting or downshifting ?? Also what is the best way to check the steering gear lube and fill it in a side distributor model ?? Thanks

Ozzy..... ..the 5-nipple sidemount should have the later improved 8N steering gearbox with visable adjusting screws in middle cover plates. It has a secret fill'em-up hole at the bottom of the battery sheetmetal attach bolt over yer right toe. You doubt? Probe with a piece of bailing wire with a "J"-hook.

Both Ford 8N steering gearbox lube spec is 90wt gear oil We recommend heavy sticky cornhead grease from yer local (byte my tongue) John Deere dealer. 2-tubes ($5, cheap) with a pressure greaser will fill yer steering box right up and keep that ball-nut weaksister upper steering bearing lubed. Make certain yer grease tubes are WARM first. (don't ask)

Drain yer 8N steering gearbox by removing the adjuster round disk over yer left toe under the battery. Let the current oil slop down the side of yer tractor into a big pan. I spray clean box by squirting mineral paint thiner with pumper oilcan. Simple, eh?..... ..Dell

Shifting on the fly can end up with a transmission that is gone. So to answer your question they are made to run it in what ever gear you need, stop to shift and then go again.

Start off in the gear that you want to run in, no shifting (it can be shifted with experience).

I could answer the steering gear lube question, but on some of them it is hidden, and cutting torch can fix that, I know.

I will let someone else explain that.
