I live in N CA.

I have seen about 3 or so of these: They are normally under heavy brush and this one is exposed after removing a lot of branches - all are under willow/small shrubs in areas close to water or damp areas. There is a hole near the top. No beavers around here.

It is on land and is about 4 ft high at max.

Any idea what kind of critter makes this? Hole in top is about big enough for a good sized rat to get into.

looks like a muskrat house, but they build their houses in water, ponds and marshes, and the entrance holes are under water. keeps out the minks, foxes, etc. I have never seen anything like you have there. John (trapper in Pa)
