How do I remove steering arm?

My 1947 2N hit a small stump while turning. After that the wheels were way out of alignment.

Someone mentioned checking the woodruff key and that is what sheared.

I can poke it with a tiny screw driver and the metal key in the slot will move. The other wheel doesn't do that.

My question now is how to I get the steering arm off of the spindel to replace the woodruff key. I've removed the larger bolt from the steering arm where it fits around the spindle. I didn't want to go prying away before getting some advice.

The tie rode end looks like it needs some replacement seals also, but is unrelated to the alignment issue, I removed the nut on the bottom of the tie rod end but that thing also seems to be pretty set in there:

There is one in both sides. I don't use it for anything.

My grandfather gave me this tractor in the summer. He's had it since '47 (bought it used but since it's a '47 it must not have been very used).

I'm not sure what he used them for, I'll have to ask him.

I know he used to (in the 50's) tow the tractor behind the truck. When I say tow I mean he hooked the tractor to the truck with a drawbar of some sort, no trailer was involved. He would leave the tractor engine running with it in neutral and usually carry something on the back, like bush hog etc. while he was building his house but still needed the tractor at the older place.

Thanks for the info guys.

Once it stops pouring down like crazy here in N. Florida, I'll get back out there, though I think it's supposed to be coming down for a day or so.

It's soaked all over in PB Blaster from trying to get the bold out of the spindle arm to begin with.

After soaking the top of the spindel with penetrant, drive a steel wedge of sorts to slightly widen the slot where the bolt passes through. Tap the steering arm from below and it should lift off.

Theres a number of ways to do that. A puller works some times, a screw driver or chisel like Dunk says and or the hammer method. Also some thing that will help is if you can turn it to where it should be before you pull it because the broken key can cause it to hang up and not want to come off. Its also a good idea to use something like PB blaster to help it slip off

Ok, I think I'll try that first before going the route of taking everything apart.

Thats how you have to take it apart to replace the bushings and bearing for the spindle. If you haven"t done it yet, you may want to consider replacing them while you have it apart. You shouldn"t have to take the tie rod off to do this.

Yeah I figure I might as well do everything while I'm there. I'm not familiar with a drift. Where do you get one and what size do I need? I assume it's a punch of some type that you seat on the top of the spindle?

Since it appears that you already have the bolt out, just drive a screwdriver, or a punch down in the gap where the bolt was taken out.

Don't git carried away and break anything, you just want to spread it some to loosen it up a tad.

Then it should just pull off.
