Yet another 12v Conversion Question...

Got a 12v kit for Christmas and have installed the single wire alternator. Had a few minor issues with the kit. A slotted bracket that the supplied bolt wouldn't fit through, a hard to swap alternator pulley, and a wiring diagram that was not 100% in agreement with the supplied wiring harness. The kit included a resistor with spade terminals and the harness had only one wire with a slide on connector. I gave it my best guess and the tractor turns over, but does not start and the ammeter never moves, so I must have something wrong. I searched for a diagram, but can't find one that shows the single wire alternator. Can someone please post one or email me one or send me a link to one? If that doesn't work, I could post pictures of my current setup. Any help appreciated. Thanks. Forgot to say this is a 52 8N sidemount.

Sorry. Didn't your kit include a 12-volt coil? I figured that would be part of the package. You should still test that resistor, though.

Use a diagram for a "3-wire" alternator, and simply OMIT the 2 wires your alternator doesn't use! Simple, EH? (Sorry, Dell!)

Third Party Image

You HAVE to use a ballast resistor with your 6-Volt "round-can coil, or you will overheat the coil and/or burn the points. This resistor will typically be in the 1.5 to 2 Ohms range.

Thanks Dell...er Bob. I had seen this diagram, but wasn't sure about those extra wires. I'll give it another try as soon as I can. I haven't even touched the lights yet. Will have to shop for some 12v bulbs next.

If you are using lights, I would source the power for the light switch from the "hot" stud on the junction block (using a fuse), rather than through the ignition switch, so as not to power the lighting load through the ignition switch.

Sounds a lot like the conversion kit I got recently for my 2N. Did you install the ceramic resistor? If you did, take it off. Mine showed 5 ohms on my multimeter instead of 0.5 ohms -- way too high even for a 6-volt coil. Somebody else can tell you for sure, but I don't think a 12-volt sidemount coil needs any added resistance.

Yep. Installed the resistor. Is it really safe to remove it? What's the worst that could happen? If I fry the 6v coil, I guess that would be a good excuse to get "a real coil".

I have just installed the exact same kit by the sound of your problems. I am also still using the 6v coil and not getting a single cyl to fire. Cranks like a champ but no spark to the plugs I am guesssing. I have the same ceramic resistor installed. Did you remember to reverse the connections on the coil? Please if you figure this out let me know.

Hmmm....I think I have the coil wires correct. I have spark at the points, but still no start. Haven't yet pulled a plug wire to check there, but would guess there is spark there too (although possibly weak). I'm planning on getting a 12V coil this weekend and ditching the resistor (unless anyone has a better idea). If you get yours sorted out first, please let me know how. Thanks.

I haven"t had the chance to do anything else yet. I am waiting for a little warmer weather! I had hoped to figure out if it is the coil before going out and buying one, but I guess it is just as easy to replace it and not worry in the future. I belive the right connection is on the + positive side to wiring harness and the - Neg side to distributor...Is that right? I had it reversed the first few times I cranked her over and I wonder if that didn"t fry the old 6v coil. It seems so odd that we both have the exact same problem with that kit, unless we each made the same mistake. Unless that supplied resistor fried the coil. I will keep in touch, please do the same. Thank you.
Regards,
Jimmy T.
