What is the best way to clean an alternator? Mine has serious grime on it, and some debris in the vents (are they vents?). Ideally I'd like to get it clean enough to paint - can you paint these?

Dukester, Where abouts do you live? Take it apart and take it somewhere have it bead blasted. I have a blast cabinet but my new compressor will not be here until Feb 1st. I bought my new Kobalt 60 gallon compressor from Lowes on sale two days before Christmas. It was out of stock when the sale was on but I paid for it ahead of time. They said I could pick up January 14th. Jan 14 came and no compressor. So I'm on hold again until Feb 1st when Coleman compressors decide to send it to Lowes. I could bead blast this thing in two minutes in my cabinet. Yah got any neighbors with a bead blaster?

No bead blasting friends but I do have one that can sandblast it. That was how I did all the sheetmetal parts of my 8N.

Dukester, I think you are getting some not-so-good advice from a place that's ordinarily excellent in the advice-department.

Electrical cleaners, brake cleaners, etc. will wash out the lubricant from the permanently sealed armature bearings. No matter how well you try to keep it out.... they are penetrating solvents and are NOT GOOD for in-situ cleaning of alternators.

Ordinary soapy water and a bristle brush, followed by a compressed-air drying will cosmetically clean your alternator suitable for painting.

gahorN, thanks for the advice. Haven't started cleaning it yet. May just use the purple stuff detergent mixed with water with a good scrubbing as you say. Once it's warm enough to scrub away outside that is! Brrr!

Buy a "chrome kit"... an empty new CHROME shell and re-use the "guts" out of your old one.

SPIFFY!

Local hot-rod shop, Summit, or ebay.

Dukester:

If you are doing a cosmetic cleaning, I suggest compressed air to clean the interior cooling passages and a good going over with a bench mounted rotary wire wheel to clean and polish the exterior.

A good coat of clear acrylic will keep it looking good for a long time.

I've done many alternators this way with good results.

Dean, thanks for the tip. This is what I was thinking as well. Not sure my wire wheel is large enough to handle it, but I"ll figure something out.

I would think that any good cleaner/degreaser like purple power or the like would work...as long as the directions are followed. I've used that stuff on/around my vehicles and it's not too bad if you dilute it according to the directions. If you use it full bore strength, it will eat paint too, just like the rest.

Electric cleaner is about the only way to go. Don't used carb cleaner or it can/will remove the paint in the wire windings and that can short the alternator out and then you will have to replace it which would also fix the grime problem but it would also help clean out your wallet some

Yep.. a spray like a crc electric contact cleaner.. or a tv tuner cleaner spray..

Brake and carb sprays will work.. but they will remove paint.. so be carefull.

You definitely want to use an electrical cleaner or you'll have problems . God bless, Ken
