Before I whang the woodruff key into the spindle I wanted to ask some help.

I've got the 5/16" x 1-1/4" woodruff key. I checked the key in the steering arm and it fits perfectly in that slot, but fitting it into the spindle arm looks to be a tight fit.

Should the woodruff key fit easily into the slot or does it require some light taps with a hammer? Should I coat the key with something? Should I do something else?

By just using my hand to place the key in this is as far as it goes:

The slot without the key in it looks like this from a slightly off center view (it's still got a bit of oily crud in there I'll clean out):

Thanks for the info guys, I just tapped it in with a small hammer after cleaning out the slot.

Clean the slot with stiff brush/solvent, and use a C-clamp to press it in.

I just did mine last weekend. Tapped lightly with a small hammer. No problems.

I would clean that out really good with a small screwdriver, or pocket knife blade, or whatever, and just tap it in.
