Finally tackled my '48 8N brakes and left axle replacement. Removed all down to seal retainer. (Not bad for 84 yr. old non-mechanic). Got unsuspecting son-in-law to help lean wheels against side of house, creating world's largest RV. Next windmills: (l). L. brake missing secondary retracting spring. FO-4 Pg.80 Fig.FO120 shows ONE; Pg. 83 Fig. FO125 TWO. 37 years no problem. Get second spring? (2) How do ROUNDHEAD four bolts at retainer come out? (3) Still unclear re Para.134, Adj. Axle Brgs. With retainer OFF, do axle rotation test? When I turned with wheels still on they turned in opposite directions.) Help w/above 3 greatly appreciated. Lesson learned till now: "A little learning is a dangerous thing...." Angelo

Here is my $.02 worth:

1) There is only a third spring on one side - the left side as you are sitting on the tractor. This is to compensate for the additional linkage it takes due to the pedal being on the right hand side of the tractor. If it is missing - buy one and install or your brakes are likely to drag.

2) Not the most scientific - but uncrew the nut on the other side a few turns - then hit the nuts squarely with a good sized hammer hitting these bolts a few wacks at a time and rotating to the others equally. This will keep the ends of the bolts from mushrooming out. DO NOT wack on the bare end of the bolt - I had to drill a few out because of this...

3) I test my bearing preload after the retainer in place. See the link below for a great tutorial on this project.

Good luck,
Dan

Dan, thanks for the prompt reply. I do have John Smith's fine tutorial. Angelo
