although it won't cure your problem completely, have you tried adjusting the the steering box? On the side are threaded adjusters with locknuts that can remove some of the lost motion in your steering perhaps to make it usable or easier to live with until you're ready to undertake a major repair. If you adjust these too tight, it will be hard to turn the steering wheel, adjust each of them to this point , then back off slightly so you can easily turn the wheel. goodluck

What year is your 8n? There are two different steering boxes. Yours may not be adjustable. I believe in 50 or 51 they changed to the adjustable type. If yours is not adjustable you will probable need to change the steering gears because they are worn. I might have some but ill have to check on it for you. If your interested email me

Both types are adjustable. One involves removing the bolts that hold the round housing and rotating the housing. The newer type uses set screws with locking nuts. Disconnect the drag links from the steering box pitman arms and turn the wheel lock-to-lock. See how much force is needed to turn the wheel and feel if there is any resistance or rough spots in turning. Check for free play before the arms start to move. If there is a lot of free play, try adjusting the sectors. If the steering shaft moves up and down in the tube, then you need to check the shims and bearings inside the box and tube.
Jack the front of the tractor up and check the spindle bushings and bearings. Also check the tie-rod ends for wear.
The Service Manual has a pretty good description of repair procedures, as does the I&T FO-4 manual. I suggest you get both before you tear into the steering.
