This board has been really helpful. One last shot at my problem. 50 8n front mount dist. 6v. I put a new radiator, hoses, belt, water pump, generator and pulley and when I start the tractor, the fan blade barely turns. Once I get the tractor started, it will not turn at all. I don"t know what else to do. Thanks, Allisue

Well first off I would loosen up the belt and make sure you can turn the water pump/fan by hand, then also do the same to the generator. If you can turn both of them by hand then if you can reach in and see if the crank pulley will turn by hand. You should have a real hard time trying to turn the crank shaft pulley since you would be trying to turn the engine over. If it does turn then you could have a broken crank shaft pulley or a broken wood drift key

Thanks, I can turn the water pump and generator by hand. Is the crankshaft pulley the only other pulley at the bottom that the belt secures too? If that is the crankshaft pulley, then I can turn it very easily and it kind of wabbles. (Just a little.)

You should not be able to turn the crank pulley by hand since doing so would turn the engine over. On an N you only have 3 pulleys. 1 for the water pump, 1 for the generator and then the crank shaft pulley which is the one that drives to other 2. Also it should not wobble any and if it does that can be big problems or small ones. All depends on it because it has done so how much wear it has caused. Theres also a bolt that hold it one and if that bolt is broke or missing thats another problem in its self. Bad thing is its not easy to fix that because you almost have to remove the radiator and hood to get in to it to fix the problem

Thanks, I already have the hood off which has been my toughest assignment yet so I might as well dig in. Thanks for all the input, it seems like we are zoning in on my problem. Thanks, allisue

allisue,

If you can turn the crank pulley easily, that is your problem. That is the drive pulley for the water pump and generator. If I remember correctly, you can't get to the pulley bolt without swinging the frontend out of the way first.

You problem is either the bolt is really loose or the woodruff key is bad.

Good luck,
Danny

I really appreciate this board. I am kind of new to repair. This is my first tractor but I have been able to put on all of the previously mentioned parts myself. Do you think this is a realitively easy job or is this a big job. Thanks, Allisue.

Easy job if #1 you know what your doing and #2 have all the right tools. I could do that job in under 3 hours and that taking it apart and having it back together but I also have a well equipped shop.

It's fairly easy but awkward. You have to block up the engine and then disconnect the frontend and one of the long rods that go from the from axle to the the back of the engine. When you try to swing the frontend out of the way, the tire want to go in all directions. Once its out of the way, it is easy to work on the pulley and bolt.

You should not be able to turn the crankshaft pulley easy. The key in the pulley must me gone also sounds like the pulley is worn out and possibly the crank shaft worn.

Thanks, how big of a job is this going to be. I don't have a lot of time on my hands right now and what do you think it might cost me to take it to an individual to fix? Thanks

Mark , You maybe could fix it yourself.First take a flash lite and a small hand held mirror and look at the center of the crankshaft pulley to see it the bolt is missing or if its broken off in the crankshaft. Better if its missing than broken off.You would have to block up under the front of the oil pan,to remove the 6 bolts on the bolster that holds the front axle on.Take the radius rods and tie rods loose by the running boards.roll the front end out of the way.slip the pulley off and hope the crankshaft is not worn much at all.The pulley where it goes on the crankshaft could be split, cracked and have most of the ware.Check the crankshaft where the wood drift key is in it.If the shaft is ok then you just need a new key and pulley.

Weird I have the wrong belt. It should be a 5/8 belt. Mine will spin fast if the belt is loose..

That has to be one of the dayumedist things I have ever heard!!

What size is you belt, I am talking how WIDE?

I wish I was able to post Hobo's recent topic on how wide the fan belt needs to be.
