I looked up the process for tuning up the 2N Front Mount Distributor on this site and the manual. I pulled the distributor and replaced the points, condensor and cap.

I double checked the points and put everything back together and it would not start.

I disassembled everything and adjusted the points again, but it would not start.

The manual said to adjust on the low, so that is where the .015 is measured? It will then open up wider from there and never touch each other?

Any idea on what I should be checking to get ole Susie back up and running?

PJF:

So, you are in Sedalia. I'm in Castle Rock and "Danny in CO" is in Larkspur. We should get together for coffee sometime & swap stories. Email me & we can start a dialog. dvork@mesanetworks.net

You do have the correct firing order? You mentioned new cap & popping.

I was able to go out last night and check the wiring. They were going to the correct cap to plug.

I went ahead and took off the distributor again and file away a little bit of the points fulcrom arm going to the cam. This allowed me to get the points down to the .015. Susie fired right up.

This morning we had a few inches of snow and 9 degrees in Sedalia, CO. She fired up and got the plow job done with no problems.

Thank you for everyones help!!!

What would we do without the support and knowledge of all you great people?!

Thanks again!

I will check it tonight. The 1 & 2 were pretty obvious, as they were taped together.

The 3 & 4 I moved one at a time, but it does not mean they were not connected correctly before I replaced the cap.

I will double check!

Thank you!

Actually, the cam, distributor shaft/bearing wear should have the opposite effect, that is not be able to reach as much as 0.015. First suspect is bad out of the box points (I've found this before). I really like the #CS35 points from NAPA better than the el cheapo stuff. You could elongate the eccentric screw hole and the mounting screw hole(s) with a small round file so that you could position the stationary point closer, or file off a little of the rubbing block material. Either would likely let you close up the gap. The rubbing block wears away faster than the point metal anyway, so you could probably just run it awhile & let the gap close down on its own. It just cuts into your dwell time and advances the ignition a little when the gap is too wide. If it gives you any comfort it can probably reach 0.030 to 0.040 range before it won't run. As for the timing, the 0.007 inch difference won't amount to more than about 4 or 5 degrees & the old low compression engine won't care. Run it and enjoy!

Thank you!!

Thank you for the reply!

I think I will try the filing, as it is making a popping sound. It never popped like this before. It is not a consistent pop, but it just does not sound like it is running very good.

pjf Your points have to be adjusted on the LOBE,HIGH spot on the shaft .015 all four lobes.Once you get then set tighten the screws tight so the points don't slip.Next fold a small piece of clean white paper (note pad) or dollar bill (because thats about all their good for any more)and open points up and put paper in close the points and polish with the paper.(that cleans oil and dirt off them.Make sure nothing is touching to ground out the points.Put it back on making sure it goes in the correct way ,only goes flush 1 way.

PJF...Points are adjusted on the HIGH lobes of the cam. Adjusting them the way you described will never let them close! HTH

Hopefully I can go out there tonight and pull the distributor.

It seems that is what I originally tried, but I could not get it to close to the .015 area. It was not even close.

It has been so long since I have had to play with points, as my old Mustangs are all gone. I wish I had just one of them now!!

I will let you know what happens.

Thanks!

I am getting pretty quick at removing and installing this distributor!

Well, I got it running. I took out the distributor and adjusted on the cam high position. The points were then able to close. The problem is, I just can not get the gap any lower than .022.

Why would this be?

Is it the points I purchased?

Is it the distributor cam shaft?

Is someone can help me determine why I can not get the points down to the .015, your help would be appreciated!

Thank you!
