Bill, you're right about the ORC, and that the thermostat goes as near the block as you can get it. I'm questioning your orientation of the thermostat.

It seems to me the "pickup" of the thermostat (that is, the thing that senses the temperature of the water), should point to the block. I think you want it to sense the temp. of the water in the block and open when the block reaches the set temperature, right?

While I've been lucky and have never had to remove or replace the thermostat in my 9N, I assume it's built like an automobile thermostat, which has the sensing device in what I would definitely call "the pointy end."

Am I missing something about the shape of an N's thermostat?

The 'pointy' end goes to the radiator, as I can attest from personal experience by putting it in backwards. See tip # 25, below!
