8N Carb leaking

It's been cold in MI, and my 8N has issues starting. Gas drizzling out of the carb. Finally it got started, after a jump, and then it was fine. Did this twice. Took the carb off, the float seemed fine, clean, floating free. I took the needle valve out, seemed fine.

Any ideas?

kenmcg said: (quoted from post at 23:21:01 01/31/08) This is just a Ken thing. My 8N starts easy and stays running in any kind of temperature. Every time you shut it off, close off the fuel knob on the sediment bowl and let it run 2 more minutes until it dies. I have been told that they will ALL leak fuel if you leave the fuel petcock on the sediment bowl open.

I won't argue one bit that it is a good idea to turn off the gas when not in use, BUT to say that they ALL leak is just wrong. I have the exception, I guess, because it can be left on for months without a problem. I try to remember to turn it off, but I haven't always. Sooner or later that little piece of trash will get me when I forget, but they do not ALL leak. This one is brass on brass, no soft tip needle here.

Oh, and how do you like the weather today? I work in Rockford. Should be burning the carbon off the valves with all this snow to plow.

Erik, I just got mine this winter too. Carb was wet and started hard so I picked up a carb kit at tractor supply. Starts good now with choke open in the cold and close the choke quickly. My tractor is in ruff shape too. If you get a kit from tractor supply, the $2?.00 kit labelled doesn't come with the lower butterfly gaskets. The $4?.00 kit I saw there was labelled for the 9n and 2n and looked like it came with everything. I should have compared them in the store.

You can leave it on while you use it off and on during the day, etc. but if you don"t cut it off when you"re done there"s always the chance of the needle not seating 100%. With the price of gasoline these days can you afford that? Also, if it floods and the wire mesh in the throat isn"t open you"ll end up with a crankcase full of gas! That gets expensive fast.

Yep, leaving the gas turned on is asking for trouble. This is from a post here last October:

"We just had an 8N in the shop that the owner wanted us to fix the carb leak and replace the starter because the engine wouldn"t turn over. Turns out the base had more gas in it than oil and the bearings didn"t get enough lube from the diluted oil and seized the engine. I think of that tractor every time I park my tractors now and don"t forget to shut the fuel off."

Check out tip # 9, below as well.

So you're saying that continuous choking will flood. Viola' That must be it...My first 8N...that explains it.

Thank you.

Apply the choke for SHORT intervals... in reply to Eriklane, 01-31-2008 06:42:29
Each operator and tractor need to get to know each other, 'cause some are more "quirky" than others. Basically, learn to get it cranking over, pull the choke out ALL THE WAY for a couple of seconds/revolutions, then shove it forward, repeat as needed. Once it fires up, the choke can be pulled out as much as needed to keep it running for the first few minutes. If you simply pull out the choke, and keep cranking it, in very little time, it will be "flooded" and gas will be dripping out of the sintered bronze air horn drain.

As Bob points out.. if it was a hard start and you used lots of choke, then there is a drain built in to drain that excess gas off. if it doesn't leak just setting there.. you may be fine.

might want to do a general tune-up to try to get better cold start performance.

Does the carb leak (run over)while it's been siting, or AFTER you crank it with the choke on?
